Cwu Rally Falls Short As Pirates Win On Road

College men

Roman Wickers and Nate Williams made two free throws each late in the game, and Whitworth held on to defeat Central Washington 77-72 in men’s basketball at Ellensburg on Friday night.

With 5 minutes to play, the Pirates (4-1) led by 19 points before Central (5-3) made a run that nearly pulled it out.

Central guard Troy Steigman, a transfer from the University of Portland, hit a 3-pointer and closed Whitworth’s lead to three with 16 seconds left. However, the Wildcats got no closer.

The game was tied 27-27 with 6 minutes remaining in the first half before Whitworth went on 16-7 run to take a 43-34 lead at halftime.

Whitworth shot 59.6 percent from the field.
