Ruff Nets 36 Points; WSU Wins

Jenni Ruff scored 36 points for Washington State as the Cougars beat Boise State 69-66 Friday night before a crowd of 2,176 at the BSU Pavilion in Boise.

Ruff’s effort equaled the second-most points scored by a Cougar. Jeanne (Eggart) Helfer, now the head coach at Mead High School, set the record with 40 points in 1981. She also scored 36 two years earlier.

The Cougars are 4-2 on the season after winning their third in a row.

The Broncos (2-3) were led by Michelle Schultz’s 18 points.

Ruff, who also led all rebounders with 12 and had her third double-double of the season, scored 20 of the team’s 33 firsthalf points.

WSU returns to action next week with two more road games against Big Sky Conference opponents - Idaho on Tuesday and Eastern Washington Friday.

Idaho 67, Cal St. Northridge 43

Idaho, spurred by Mindy Rice’s 21 second-half points, beat Cal State Northridge in the first round of the Best Western Vandal Tournament in front of 419 fans in Memorial Gym.

Rice finished with a game-high 30 points and 15 rebounds. She shot 9 for 17 from the field and was 12 for 13 from the free-throw line. Ari Skorpik scored eight of her 12 points in the second half and added four assists for the Vandals.

Idaho will now face Big West opponent San Jose State for the Best Western Championship at 7 p.m. tonight. SJSU beat Sacramento State in the early game, 85-68.

Utah (5-1) ran out to a 15-3 lead and coasted. Gonzaga (1-5) was led by Rebekah Sherfey, who had 11 points. She was the only Bulldog to score in double figures.

Julie Krommenhoek led Utah with 27 points and former Wilbur-Creston star Angie Bandy-Donahue finished with 13 points and five rebounds in 22 minutes for the Utes.
