Lake City Tops Eagle To Pick Up First Win

Idaho preps

This time the Lake City High School boys basketball team finished the job.

Beaten in two previous games that they could have won, the visiting Timberwolves made key free throws in the fourth quarter to knock off the Eagle Mustangs 57-52 in a non-league game Saturday.

Lake City (1-2), which fell to defending State A-1 champion Centennial 64-54 on Friday, salvaged a split in its annual trip to Boise. Eagle, in its first year of existence, is the third A-1 school in the Meridian School District.

The fourth-ranked T-Wolves jumped out to a quick lead and extended it to 16 points (32-16) by halftime. But the Mustangs - led by point guard Clint Hordemann, who started for Centennial last season - rallied in the second half. In fact, No. 4-ranked Eagle took the lead in the fourth quarter.

But Lake City made 13 of 15 free throws in the final period to recover from a flat third quarter.

Jon Chatfield led LC with 21 points, Scott Hoover had 11 and Jerid Keefer added 10. Point guard Mike Thompson had seven points and four assists.

Hordemann led Eagle (2-2) with 13 points and Jeb Putzier had 10.

It took until the fourth quarter before the Patriots could open up a comfortable cushion on the visiting Vikings in a non-league game.

For the Viks, it was too much Jon Harris. The A-1 player of the year and 6-foot-5 senior post scored a game-high 34 points, pulled down 10 rebounds and blocked six shots. He made 12 of 16 field goal attempts.

“We were just flat after a tough game against Lake City,” Centennial coach Tom Aipperspach said. “Finally in the fourth quarter we go some offensive rhythm and we also stepped it up defensively.”

The Viks dropped to 1-3 overall while third-ranked Centennial is 3-1.

Josh Davis led CdA with 16 points.

CdA sent Centennial to the freethrow line 39 times and the Pats made 28. CdA was 13 of 22 from the line.

The Viks return to action next Friday when they play host to Boise.
