Second-Half Run Saves Whitworth

The Whitworth men’s basketball team went on a big run in the second half to defeat Northwest College 79-65 at Kirkland, Wash., Saturday night.

With the score tied at 43-43 in the second half, Whitworth went on a 29-6 run and cruised to the win.

“This was a good weekend series for us,” Whitworth coach Warren Friedrichs said.

The Pirates (5-1) defeated Central Washington 77-72 Friday night at Ellensburg.

Whitworth’s run against Northwest was triggered by a defensive assignment shift. Friedrichs put 6-foot-4 forward Jeff Arkills on Northwest’s 5-11 shooting guard Todd Nealey, who had a tougher time getting off shots against the bigger Arkills.

Nealey, from LaCrosse, Wash., who transferred from Big Bend Community College, finished with a game-high 28 points. However, most of those came before Arkills started guarding him. Nealey finished 6 for 8 from the 3-point line.

Whitworth was led by Roman Wickers (22 points), Nate Williams (21) and Nate Dunham (19). Williams finished 7 for 8 from the floor. The Pirates also outrebounded the Eagles 36-28. The Eagles fell to 4-8 and suffered their second loss of the year to Whitworth.

Whitworth returns to action on Saturday at 8 p.m. when it plays host to Carroll College.
