Turnovers Cost Idaho In Title Game

Idaho had three turnovers in its final six possessions to seal its own fate, losing 68-65 to San Jose State in the championship game of the Best Western-Vandal Basketball Tournament in Moscow.

“It’s the same little things that continue to beat us,” said coach Julie Holt. “Game in and game out our composure still continues to hurt us. We didn’t do a good job mentally preparing. If we had we could’ve had a championship.”

Idaho had a chance to win but Mindy Rice’s 3-pointer at the buzzer fell short. San Jose State’s Natasha Johnson hit two foul shots with 13 seconds to provide the winning margin.

The Vandals were paced by Rice’s 24 points and 10 rebounds. Rice had just two points and six rebounds in the first half.

Ari Skorpik, who has scored in double figures in all of Idaho’s first four games, joined Rice on the alltournament team, finishing with 16 points and six assists. Junior college transfer Michelle Greenwood came off the bench to score 10 points in 20 minutes.

Tournament MVP Kylie Page led San Jose State (2-4) with a game-high 29 points. Kari Steele and Natasha Johnson each added 12.

Idaho (3-2) meets Washington State on Tuesday night in Memorial Gym.

Washington 76, EWU 40

Gena Pelz scored six points and Jamie Redd five during an 18-2 run in the middle of the second half that turned a comfortable Washington lead into a runaway victory over Eastern Washington at Seattle.

Redd scored 14 points for Washington while Shannon Kelly scored 12 and Pelz 11.

The Huskies of the Pacific-10 Conference won their third straight after opening the season with four consecutive losses.

Eastern Washington, of the Big Sky Conference, fell to 1-3.

Washington’s full-court pressure forced 35 turnovers by the Eagles, 15 on steals.

Shana Ray scored nine points for Eastern Washington.

Kelly scored six points on a pair of 3-pointers and Malinda Lynch added five points during a 12-2 run that put Washington up 18-6 just 8 minutes into the game.

The Eagles went scoreless for more than 4 minutes during that streak and trailed by at least eight points for the rest of the half.

Washington led 35-19 at halftime and led by at least 14 points throughout the entire second half.

Lewis-Clark State (8-2) demolished the Pirates (1-6) at the Whitworth College Fieldhouse, sending the Pirates to their sixth-straight loss.

Thirteen players scored for the Warriors while Whitworth’s Jennifer Tissue and Sherri Northington (10 points each) were the only Pirates in double figures.
