Avalanche Roll To Win Behind Roy

Associated Press

NHL roundup

Patrick Roy made 30 saves, several of the spectacular variety, and registered his first victory with his new team as the Colorado Avalanche beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-1 Monday night in Toronto.

Craig Wolanin, Adam Deadmarsh, Joe Sakic, Stephane Yelle and Valeri Kamensky scored for Colorado, the Pacific Division leaders.

“He made some big saves early and that gave our players the world of confidence,” Avalanche coach Marc Crawford said. “We had that feeling that, if you go out there and play hard, you’ll get that solid back-stopping behind you.”

Doug Gilmour scored for the Leafs, who had been 3-0-1 in their last four games.
