Drug Czar Lee Brown Resigns
Lee P. Brown announced Tuesday that he will resign as the nation’s drug czar to accept a position at Rice University here.
“The Bible tells us there is a time for every season, a time for every purpose on earth,” Brown said. “My time as director of drug policy is ending. My role as scholar - an old and comfortable one - is about to resume.”
Brown, a former Houston police chief, said he will begin working at Rice when spring classes start Jan. 15.
President Clinton issued a statement saying he accepts Brown’s decision with regret and expressed gratitude to Brown for his work in the war against drugs.
