Mavs Shoot Down Sonics Dallas Rookie Scores 35 Points As Mavs Force Ot, Win 112-101

The Seattle SuperSonics let up down the stretch Tuesday night, and Dallas Mavericks bombers Tony Dumas and George McCloud made them pay.

Dumas came off the bench to score a career-high 35 points, including 16 in the fourth quarter and overtime, as the Mavericks rallied from a 17-point third-quarter deficit for a 112-101 victory.

“We gave them the opportunity to get back in it with some lazy focus,” Sonics coach George Karl said after his team had a four-game winning streak snapped. “But you also have to give Dallas credit. They made great shot after great shot.”

Hersey Hawkins scored 24 points for the Sonics, who had won seven of eight and had beaten the Mavericks in their last eight meetings. Shawn Kemp had a career-high 22 rebounds for Seattle.

“It just slipped away,” Sonics forward Sam Perkins said. “We allowed them some easy plays and it cost us.”

McCloud, who finished with 30 points, got Dallas started in the overtime with a 3-pointer for a 95-92 lead. Dumas’ 3-pointer with 1:40 left in the extra session pushed Dallas’ advantage to 102-96. Then McCloud’s basket and 3-pointer, the second with 29 seconds to play, gave Dallas a 108-99 advantage.

Dumas’ 35 points tied the Dallas club mark for points off the bench. Jason Kidd had a career-high 18 assists to tie Derek Harper’s Dallas club record.

The Mavs had lost four straight and 11 of 12 and were 0-3 in the first three overtime games this season.

“It seemed like our whole body english changed from that dark self-pity to the one of enlightenment,” said Mavs coach Dick Motta.

Dumas hit 4 of 7 3-pointers.

“They were leaving me open so I told myself not to hesitate,” Dumas said. “This says a lot about our character.”

The Sonics were in command by as many as 12 points in the fourth quarter before the Mavs made their late run, pulling to 91-90 with 1:33 to play on McCloud’s 3-pointer.

The Mavs had a shot at the lead with 10 seconds left, but Gary Payton got a piece of Kidd’s 3-point try from the left corner. Payton had missed an 18-footer with 27 seconds left.

Payton was fouled, and made 1 of 2 free throws with 3.6 seconds left for a 92-90 lead.
