Son Sues Landlord, Cda Over Mother’s Death

Winda Benedetti Staff Writer

The son of a woman killed in a 1993 apartment fire is suing the landlord and the city of Coeur d’Alene.

Terry Lee Parfrey Jr. and his father, Terry Lee Parfrey Sr., claim Kimberly Parfrey’s death could have been prevented. The mother of three died March 29, 1993, after flames scorched her friend’s apartment at 621 Lakeside Ave., where she had been visiting.

Firefighters found the 35-year-old woman pressed against the door of the third-story apartment. She died from smoke inhalation, officials said.

According to the suit, Sydney Goodwin, the owner, knew or should have known that the building was in violation of building, zoning and fire codes.

The city also knew the building was in violation of several codes but did nothing to prevent Goodwin from operating his apartment complex, according to the lawsuit.
