Much Ado About Old Records

Doug Floyd Interactive Editor

The state of Washington missed its chance to grab Spokane’s historic but long-neglected Carnegie Library as a new home for Eastern Washington’s historical archives. A private architectural firm acquired the building at 10 S. Cedar a few years ago and did a stunning renovation.

But the idea of moving the region’s archives to Spokane from Eastern Washington University in Cheney lives on. Secretary of State Ralph Munro wants a $4 million repository for the records at the Riverpoint Higher Education Park.

Is Spokane a better home for old public papers that document the region’s history? Should they stay put? Is there another, better way of handling them?

Too much wind beneath their wings?

Some biologists, but not all, think eagle-viewing cruises at Wolf Lodge Bay on Lake Coeur d’Alene would disturb the majestic birds who feed on kokanee there.

Some cruise boat operators, but not all, have passed on the idea in deference to those concerns.

Bald eagles have been taken off the endangered species list. Spectators line the shore this time of year to catch a glimpse of them.

If biologists can’t agree on the potential harm to eagles, how do readers feel about excursion boats at Wolf Lodge Bay?

If life serves you lemons, make hot chocolate

Many Spokane folks began Wednesday in a frantic rush to make up for oversleeping (thanks to wind-caused power outages), but for one colleague at The Spokesman-Review the blackout produced a heart-warmer.

Her daughter and granddaughter had arrived from Germany for a holiday visit and just as they had brewed up a round of hot chocolate Mother Nature blew the lights out.

Cocoa by candlelight - sounds more like a Christmas card than an inconvenience.

What other power outage stories would “Bagpipes” readers care to share?

What’s in a community?

“Bagpipes” is still collecting readers’ thoughts about community. What makes us one? What are the commonalities that define one? And how do we hold on to those shared values when other issues try to separate us?
