WSU’s Silvernail Becomes Second-Team All-American

Washington State University middle blocker Sarah Silvernail was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-America second team Wednesday.

The 6-foot-1 junior from Tacoma was one of 24 Division I players honored by the AVCA with first- and second-team selections. Silvernail becomes the second WSU volleyball player to earn All-America status. Keri Killebrew was named to the All-America second team in 1992, and is currently an assistant coach with the WSU volleyball program.

“I think Sarah’s selection is very exciting for Washington State volleyball,” coach Cindy Fredrick said. “It is a wonderful honor for Sarah because she has worked hard to get this honor. It says a lot for her as a junior to be named a second-team All-American and it gives her a little bit of leeway to have some goals for her senior year.”

Silvernail led the Cougars to their third straight NCAA appearance and a 22-7 overall record. WSU finished in a tie for second in the Pacific-10 Conference, the highest finish in school history. The Cougars were ranked as high as fifth, the highest ranking for any sport in school history.

Silvernail led her team with 483 kills. Her 4.69 kills-per-game average led the conference and her .329 hitting percentage and 1.49 blocks per game ranked second. She was player of the week twice and All-Pac-10 a third time. She also was named to the All-District 8 team.
