Steve Mariucci, quarterback coach with the Green Bay Packers, was named California’s football coach on Thursday.

Mariucci spent five years at Cal as a coach of wide receivers and special teams and was offensive coordinator in 1990 and 1991. He replaces Keith Gilbertson, the former Idaho coach, who was fired Nov. 20 after a 3-8 season with Cal.

The Golden Bears signed Mariucci to a five-year contract. Financial terms of the contract were not released. Mariucci will split time between coaching jobs until Green Bay’s season is over. Mariucci has been Green Bay’s quarterback coach the past four years.

Oregon football coach Mike Bellotti has agreed to terms of a multi-year contract to coach the Ducks.

The NFL has refused a congressional request that the league delay a planned Jan. 17 vote on letting the Cleveland Browns move to Baltimore.

Northwestern’s Gary Barnett was named winner of the Bear Bryant Award as the college football coach of the year.

Nebraska coach Tom Osborne wasn’t certain if junior running back Lawrence Phillips would return to play for the Cornhuskers next season. That could mean the Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 2 could be Phillips’ last game in a Huskers uniform.
