Associated Press

Pac-10

Reggie Geary scored a career-high 21 points and handed out seven assists to lead No. 4 Arizona past Texas-El Paso 90-70 Saturday night at Tucson, Ariz.

Ben Davis and Corey Williams added 14 points apiece as the Wildcats (8-0) held off a late first-half rally by the Miners (5-1) and opened the game up in the second half.

Arizona, which had five scorers in double figures, never trailed.

The Wildcats built the lead up to 14 late in the first half when Miles Simon converted a technical foul shot with 4:25 left in the half to make it 37-23.

But the Miners finished with a 13-4 run to cut Arizona’s halftime lead to 41-36. Mark Ingles had five points in the run.

Fresno St. 83, Oregon 82

At Fresno, Calif., Dominick Young scored eight points in the closing seconds to lead the Bulldogs (4-4) to a win over the Ducks in a non-conference game.

Young’s last 3-point basket with 18 seconds left reversed an 82-80 Oregon lead. The Ducks (3-4) were ahead by eight when Young began his barrage at the 1:28 mark. He led all scorers with 21, followed by Fresno’s James Gray with 19.

Jamal Lawrence scored 14 points for Oregon in the first half but only one in the second. By contrast, Kyle Milling had 12 second-half points for the Ducks and Jamar Curry 10.

Arizona St. 85, Sac St. 73

At Tempe, Ariz., Jeremy Veal scored a game-high 25 points and Ron Riley added 24 as the Sun Devils (3-2) beat the Hornets (3-5).

Veal added seven assists to bring Arizona State back from the early deficit and snap the team’s two-game losing streak.

Abie Ramirez scored 10 of his 12 first-half points as the Hornets took a 25-17 lead with 9:26 left in the first half.

But Veal scored seven points and Riley added five as the Sun Devils outscored the Hornets 21-4 over a 5-minute span and led 38-29 with 2:55 left in the first half.

Texas 83, Oregon St. 51

At Austin, Texas, after a cold-shooting first half that netted just 19 points, the Longhorns rallied behind Reggie Freeman and Sonny Alvarado, outscoring the Beavers 64-26 the second half.

Freeman scored 23 points, 19 in the second half, as the Longhorns (4-2) hit 58 percent of their shots after intermission. Oregon State (1-4), which led 28-19 at the half, was led by forwards Sonny Benjamin (11) and Sasa Petrovic (10).

USC 82, UC Irvine 79

At Los Angeles, Brandon Martin and Jaha Wilson scored 15 points each to lead the Trojans to a win over the Anteaters (3-2).

Trailing 80-79 with 13 seconds to play, Irvine’s Kevin Simmons missed a 5-foot bank shot. Two free throws by Stais Boseman with 2.7 seconds remaining sealed a third straight victory for the Trojans (5-1).

Simmons led the Anteaters with 23 points and 11 rebounds.

Southern Cal took a 70-62 lead - the largest lead for either team - after Boseman’s 3-pointer with 5:18 remaining. But Irvine guard Clay McKnight answered with a 3-pointer to narrow the gap to 70-65.

California 70, Minnesota 67

At Minneapolis, Ed Gray scored 22 points and Shareef Abdur-Rahim had 17 as the Bears withstood a late Minnesota rally to defeat the Gophers.

The game was played before 25,614 people at the Metrodome, a University of Minnesota record crowd. The previous high was 20,176, set on Feb. 28, 1955 at Williams Arena during a 72-70 loss to Iowa.

Alfred Grigsby sank 1 of 2 free throws with 5 seconds left to give California (4-0) the three-point lead after Minnesota’s Sam Jacobson had missed a 3-point shot that would have given the Gophers (5-3) the lead with 6 seconds to play.

Cal led by 12 points at 67-55 with just over 3 minutes to play before Minnesota mounted its comeback. Jacobson hit a pair of free throws and Quincy Lewis made three straight shots, including a 3-pointer at 1:16, to cut the margin to 67-64.
