Chemical Fire Forces 1,500 Chileans To Flee

Compiled From Wire Services

Fire swept through a chemical plant in a suburb of the capital Sunday, killing one woman with a flying piece of shrapnel and releasing fumes that forced 1,500 people to flee their homes.

Fire Commander Jose Matute said breathing in the area could be risky because the fire burned as much as 50,000 gallons of methanol, kerosene “and other chemical elements.”
