Georgia Lures Mason Away From Kansas With Six-Year Contract

Compiled From Wire Services

Glen Mason, who in eight seasons built Kansas into a nationally ranked team, was given the job Monday of returning Georgia to the football elite in the Southeastern Conference.

At Athens, Ga., Mason, 45, agreed to a six-year contract to coach the Bulldogs. He succeeds Ray Goff, fired last month after seven seasons at his alma mater.

“To say I’m excited about being a Bulldog is an understatement,” Mason said before returning to Kansas. The Jayhawks travel to Honolulu today for a Christmas Day Aloha Bowl game against UCLA.

Mason has a 54-57-1 record in 10 seasons, the first two at Kent State and the last eight at Kansas, where he went 42-47-1. The Jayhawks are 9-2 this season.

Georgia athletic director Vince Dooley said Mason’s contract will be worth $500,000 a year.

At Dallas, Derek Canine, who started at quarterback for Southern Methodist the last six games, has withdrawn from school after admitting he used a term paper written by his brother.

At Boise, quarterback Andy Burrill has been suspended indefinitely from the Boise State football team for violating team rules.

Burrill, a redshirt freshman, appeared in just two games last season and threw one incomplete pass.

At Corvallis, Ore., Dan Ferrigno, an assistant football coach at Oregon State the past nine years, resigned to accept a similar job at California.

At Dillon, Mont., defensive coordinator Nels Kludt was hired as the head coach at Western Montana College.
