Gu Women Defeated By San Diego St. 78-59

Tameka Johnson scored 12 of her 18 points in the second half as San Diego State downed Gonzaga 78-59 in non-league women’s basketball Monday night at Martin Centre.

Johnson grabbed five rebounds and was 6 of 9 from the field as the Aztecs (5-1) won their third straight game over the Bulldogs (1-7).

San Diego State built a 42-23 lead in the first half as Gonzaga struggled from the field.

The Bulldogs made just 8 of 26 field-goal attempts and were 2 of 8 from 3-point range the first half.

Staci Andrews led Gonzaga with 13 points. Joy Pauley added 11.

Jurate Zukauskaite had 15 points for the Aztecs. San Diego State made 13 steals and forced 19 turnovers.

Vandal honored

Despite two tough defeats for the Vandals, Idaho senior forward Mindy Rice is the Big Sky Conference women’s basketball player of the week.

Rice hit 18 of 35 field goal attempts (51.4 percent), 12 of 13 free throws and averaged 24.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game in losses to Washington State and Portland.
