Man Killed 1 Hour After Turning 21

Tue., Dec. 19, 1995, midnight

A Colville-area man who had been celebrating his 21st birthday died early Sunday when he plunged through the ice on White Mud Lake three miles southeast of town.

Anthony J. Spengler had been 21 only an hour when he left a party at a nearby house and strolled onto the small, ice-covered lake.

Tracks indicated his foot broke through the ice several times before he fell in, authorities said.

A neighbor told the Stevens County Sheriff’s Department she heard someone calling for help shortly after 1 a.m., but Spengler was underwater when rescuers arrived.

Sheriff’s divers removed Spengler from the lake about 90 minutes later and he was pronounced dead at Mount Carmel Hospital.
