Seattle Panel Maps Out Stadium Plan

Associated Press

The panel over-seeing construction of a new baseball stadium for the Seattle Mariners took off running at its first meeting.

Among the decisions made Monday:

Requests will be sent out by the end of the week to national architecture and design firms for qualifications and concepts for the new stadium.

An architect will be chosen to handle the job by the end of January.

A non-negotiable price cap for the project will be set by the end of 1996.

A mission statement says the ballpark “must combine the look and feel of traditional ballparks with the convenience, amenities and revenue-generating features of a modern state-of-the art facility.”

The King County Council has given the group until August to find a spot for the stadium and until December to come up with a design and financing plan.

The $320 million stadium will be built with a combination of state and local tax revenue, including $107 million over 20 years from the state.
