Snow Cools Penguins, But Flames Snuffed

Associated Press

NHL

To his everlasting regret, Calgary Flames goalie Trevor Kidd was not one of the people who couldn’t make it to the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh on Tuesday night.

Mario Lemieux had a goal and three assists against the former Spokane Chief as Pittsburgh beat the Flames 7-1 Tuesday night before the Penguins’ smallest home crowd in nearly 10 years.

Attendance was just 7,170 because of a snowstorm that started in the afternoon. The Penguins entered the game averaging 16,328, which is 95 percent of capacity for their first 13 home games. Tuesday’s crowd was the smallest since 6,966 watched a 4-3 win over New Jersey on Jan. 6, 1986. The Penguins said 14,148 tickets were sold for Tuesday’s game.

The Penguins broke open a 1-1 game and tortured Kidd.

“We played a good first period and kept the puck in deep,” Kidd said. “After that, we kind of stood around and watched them. Maybe we were in awe. I don’t know. That’s by far the best club we’ve played all year.”.
