Phillips, Ackerman Earn Honors

From Staff And Wire Reports

Idaho’s Ryan Phillips and Eastern Washington’s Tom Ackerman were named to the Associated Press’ All-American third-team on Wednesday.

Phillips, a junior end, was the Big Sky Conference defensive player of the year. He had 11 sacks among his 60 tackles.

Ackerman became EWU’s sixth All-American offensive lineman since the school joined Division I-AA in 1984. The senior co-captain was a unanimous selection to the Big Sky’s first-team.

Quarterback Dave Dickenson, who led Montana to the national championship, was joined on the first team by Weber State receiver Pokey Eckford and Northern Arizona cornerback Rayna Stewart and punter Kevin O’Leary.

Second-team selections from the Big Sky included Northern Arizona quarterback Jeff Lewis, Montana receiver Matt Wells and linebacker Jason Crebo, and Weber State place kicker Scott Shields.

Montana offensive lineman Mike Agee joined Ackerman and Phillips on the third team.
