Two Men Charged In American’s Death

Compiled From Wire Services

Two Jamaicans have been charged with killing an American who was set upon by a crowd, stabbed and fatally beaten after a car accident earlier this month, police said Sunday.

Charged with killing John Beckett, 41, formerly of Hanover Township, Ohio, are Glenford Murray, a 26-year-old jeweler, and Renford Thomas, a 29-year-old food vendor.

If they are found guilty of capital murder, the punishment is hanging. A lesser conviction of noncapital murder could land them in prison for life.

Police reports said Beckett was attacked after the car he was driving hit a soup stand and a speaker broadcasting music at a roadside dance. A crowd smashed the car and beat Beckett unconscious.
