Convicted Killer Denied New Trial
The woman convicted of killing Selena was denied a new trial Wednesday by the judge who presided over the original trial.
But State District Judge Mike Westergren said he found the defense argument that important information was withheld from the trial “somewhat problematic” and that he thought the matter should be considered by an appeals court.
Lawyers for convicted murderer Yolanda Saldivar said she deserved a new trial because the criminal record of key witness Maria Norma Martinez was not revealed during the October trial.
A defense lawyer claimed knowledge of Martinez’s theft record would have tarnished her credibility.
