Drunk Guest Fires Gun, Kills 2 At Wedding

Compiled From Wire Services

A wedding turned into a tragedy when a jubilant guest fired 12 rounds from an unlicensed handgun into a concrete ceiling. The bullets ricocheted, killing two people and injuring nine on Sunday.

Mecit Bas, 36, was charged with involuntary manslaughter. He told a court Wednesday that he was drunk when he fired his 9mm Browning above a crowd of 380 people.

Fatma Kayiran, 20, and Gullu Tanriverdi, 42, died from their wounds. Nine other guests were wounded, and Copenhagen’s Turkish community was in shock. The bride and groom were unhurt.

Bas, a Danish resident of Turkish descent, said he had obtained the gun without a permit because he feared for his life from acquaintances now under police investigation. Bas recently finished serving a four-year jail term for heroin trafficking, police said said. He faces four years in jail for manslaughter.
