Demand Rising For Internet-Fluent

Associated Press

Wanted: Computer programmers familiar with the Internet, willing to relocate South.

Despite a weakening employment picture nationally, the prospects are looking better for job seekers comfortable with computing and conversant in the lingo of cyberspace, an industry survey shows. The demand is greatest among companies expanding in southern states.

The scramble just to keep businesses up to date technologically has created a growing appetite for computer professionals that will increase in 1996, the survey showed.

The results are based on mail-in responses from 225 corporate recruiters and information systems executives in the Jan. 2 edition of Computerworld, a widely read weekly industry publication based in Framingham, Mass.

The survey, conducted in November, found businesses of all sizes and in all parts of the country planned to hire more people for their information systems operations in 1996.

Six out of 10 companies in the South Atlantic states said they wanted to hire more information system professionals, making that area the hottest market in the nation.

Other regions weren’t far behind, with 48 percent of the respondents in New England, East, South, Central and Mountain states planning to increase their computer support staffs.
