Georgetown Wins In Final Seconds

Boubacar Aw scored on a rebound with 30 seconds remaining, and No. 6 Georgetown survived a major scare Thursday night to beat Duquesne 88-86 in a neutral-site game in Lakeland, Fla.

After Aw’s basket following a miss by Jerry Nichols, the Dukes had a final chance to tie. But Mike James missed a 15-footer with 3 seconds left.

Georgetown (10-1) appeared to take control when Allen Iverson scored eight points in the opening minutes of the second half. That gave the Hoyas a 60-53 lead.

But Duquesne (4-3) refused to fold. Nick Bosnic had a four-point play to start the comeback. Atlantic 10 Conference scoring leader Tom Pipkins followed with three longdistance baskets, cutting the deficit to 73-70 with 9 minutes left.

Pipkins had 30 points. Othella Harrington led the Hoyas with 25.

(1)UMass 78, North Carolina St. 67

At Honolulu, Marcus Camby scored 19 points, 11 in the second half, to lead a balanced attack as the Minutemen (8-0) turned back the Wolfpack (6-1) in the opening round of the Rainbow Classic.

Massachusetts had to overcome a dazzling performance by NC-State’s Todd Fuller and Danny Strong, who combined for 53 of their team’s 67 points.

(3) Memphis 68, Temple 58

At Memphis, Tenn., Mingo Johnson scored 19 points and had six assists to lead the Tigers (8-0) past the Owls.

Memphis ended Temple’s string of victories over top-ranked teams. Over the last 15 days, the Owls had defeated Villanova, which was No. 2 at the time, and last week’s No. 1 team, Kansas.

(8) Villanova 91, Hofstra 57

At Philadelphia, Kerry Kittles’ 16 points led five Villanova players in double figures as the Wildcats (9-1) pounded the Flying Dutchmen (2-5).

Villanova spotted Hofstra a 20-11 lead in the game’s first five minutes, then quickly let loose a 3-point barrage to take the lead for good.

(9) Arizona 88, Texas A&M 44

At Tucson, Ariz., Joe McLean scored 10 of his career-high 20 points during a 20-1 surge in the second half that let the air out of the Aggies (4-4) and sent the Wildcats (9-1) to an easy win.

Derrick Hart tied his career high with 25 points, but nobody else got into double figures for Texas A&M.

(10) Iowa 100, Colorado 85

At Boulder, Colo., Russ Millard scored 28 points and five other Hawkeyes (11-1) scored in double figures to lead Iowa over the Buffaloes (5-4).

Leading 52-36, Iowa went on a 15-6 run to begin the second half. All 15 of those points came on 3-point baskets, including one from Millard and two from forward Jess Settles.

(11) N.Carolina 66, N.C.-Asheville 49

At Asheville, N.C., Jeff McInnis scored 13 points and Danta Calabria sparked an 18-5 run in the second half as the Tar Heels (9-1) sputtered to a win over the Bulldogs (4-4).

Despite going 9-for-30 in the first half, UNCA took a 17-15 lead on Vincent Krieger’s 15-footer with 6:46 left in the half. North Carolina came back with the next six points on baskets by Ademola Okulaja, McInnis and Calabria, and went on to a 26-23 halftime edge.

USC 75, (18) Missouri 64

At Honolulu, Brandon Martin scored 13 points and Stais Boseman added 12 in the first half as the Trojans (7-2) upset the Tigers (7-3) in the Rainbow Classic.

Boiseman finished with 19 points, followed by Martin with 16.

UNLV 66, (19) Michigan 64

At Las Vegas, Jermaine Smith had a career-high 24 points and the Rebels (2-5) held the Wolverines (9-3) without a basket for more than eight minutes during the second half to pull off an upset.

UNLV led 66-62 with 44 seconds left, then survived two misses on the front end of free throws by Clayton Johnson to pull off the school’s biggest win in three years.

(20) Duke 69, Monmouth 53

At Durham, N.C., Ricky Price broke out of a mini-slump with a career-high 27 points, waking up Duke’s sluggish offense in the second half as the Blue Devils (8-2) defeated the Hawks (3-5).

Duke, coming off an eight-day layoff, played most of the first half without three starters.

At Roanoke, Va., Ace Custis had 18 points and 11 rebounds, and Shawn Smith scored seven of his 10 points in the final three minutes as the Hokies (5-1) beat the Cavaliers (4-3).
