Obituaries

William Tylzynski Rathdrum, Idaho

Service for William M. Tylzynski, 75, will be today at 12:30 p.m. at Coeur d’Alene Memorial Funeral Home. Burial will follow at the Pines Cemetery Mausoleum in Spokane.

Mr. Tylzynski, who was born in Milwaukee, died Tuesday.

He was raised in Michigan and California and served in the Navy during World War II and the Korean War. He retired from the Navy in 1957.

Mr. Tylzynski was a police officer while attending the University of Oklahoma and then went to work for the Federal Aviation Administration, retiring in 1968.

He married Ruth Schroer in 1974 and they moved to Rathdrum in 1984.

He was an avid outdoorsman and loved golfing and fishing. He was a member of the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Jon of Michigan and Michael of Post Falls; four stepdaughters, Debbie Tylzynski of Rathdrum, Katherine Karnik of Brighton, Colo., Marilyn Brickle of Aurora, Colo., and Frances McCarthy of San Francisco; 15 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Gary Thomas Spokane

Graveside service for Gary G. Thomas, 55, will be today at 11:30 a.m. at the Pines Mausoleum in the Spokane Valley. English Funeral Home of Post Falls is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Thomas, who was born in Spokane, died Tuesday.

He graduated from high school in Yakima and served with the Navy.

He worked many years for Safeway Stores Inc. and then worked for Wonder Bread. He retired after becoming disabled with multiple sclerosis.

Mr. Thomas was an avid outdoorsman and loved fishing.

Survivors include his companion, Patty Gay of Spokane; three sons, Joel of Japan, Scott of Polson, Mont., and Chad of Spokane; his mother, Helen Thomas of Yakima; three brothers, Terry of Renton, Wash., Jim of Kent, Wash., and Dick of Tacoma; a sister, Dianne Montgomery of Tacoma; and three granddaughters.

Memorials may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Spokane.

Carmen Torchie St. Maries

Service for Carmen F. Torchie, 84, will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Yates-Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in St. Maries.

Mr. Torchie, who was born in Harrison, Idaho, died Tuesday.

He grew up in Harrison and St. Maries and worked in the construction business.

He married Wilma Dollarhide in 1942.

Mr. Torchie later worked as a manager for Post Falls Logging Co.

In 1954 he bought the St. Maries Shell service station, and it later became Torchie’s Chevron. He retired in 1977.

Mr. Torchie enjoyed gardening and mechanical work. He was a member of the St. Maries Eagles and Elks lodges and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Lenny Torchie of St. Maries; and one brother, Tony of California.

Howard Carriveau Spokane

Visitation for Howard A. Carriveau, 84, is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon today. Service will follow at 2 p.m. at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Private burial will be at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mr. Carriveau, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Tuesday.

He had worked as a yardman for Northern Pacific Railroad.

There are no surviving family members.

Edna Haugen Spokane

Memorial service for Edna S. Haugen, 91, is planned for 10 a.m. today at Central Lutheran Church. Private burial will precede. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in North Dakota, Miss Haugen died Sunday.

She graduated from St. Paul Hospital School of Nursing in 1928 and worked as a registered nurse at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., for 15 years and at Minneapolis Hospital for six years. She moved to Spokane in 1951 and was a medical supervisor at Deaconess Medical Center for 16 years.

Miss Haugen was a member of Central Lutheran Church and Deaconess Hospital Auxiliary.

Survivors include two sisters, Bernice Haugen of Spokane and Gena Greve of Bellevue, Wash.

Glyndene Bartlett Wallace

A gathering of family and friends of Glyndene Agnes Bartlett, 75, will be held Saturday from 1-4 p.m. at the family home, 304 Fourth St., in Wallace.

Mrs. Bartlett, who was born in Clark Fork, Idaho, died Wednesday.

She graduated from Clark Fork High School and later moved to Metaline Falls, Wash. She returned to North Idaho in 1948.

Mrs. Bartlett was a homemaker and had also worked as a sales clerk at Ramsier’s Drug Store in Wallace.

Survivors include her husband, Paul; one son, John Duffy of Mountain Home, Idaho; four daughters, Mary Vipperman of Wallace, Margaret Reynolds of Osburn, Idaho, Janet Watkins of California and Marge Benson of Coeur d’Alene; three stepchildren, Terry, Kevin and Paula, all of Washington; 18 grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

James Livingston Spokane

Service for James W. Livingston, 87, will be at 2 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North. Burial will be at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Born in Yakima, Mr. Livingston died Tuesday.

He had lived in Spokane for 69 years and worked as a meat cutter for Hygrade Meats for 36 years. He later worked in residential and commercial painting.

He was a member of Central Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Mr. Livingston’s survivors include his wife, Pearl Livingston; three sons, Norman and Neil Livingston, both of Spokane, and Ronald Livingston of Green Bluff; five daughters, Jean Dury of Liberty Lake, Phyllis Fairchild of Baker, Ore., Allene Tattrie and Carol Hartman, both of Spokane, and Linda Grasson of Parker, Colo.; 25 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Imre Markotics Spokane

Visitation for Imre Markotics, 77, is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral HomeSouth. Service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Cremation will follow.

Mr. Markotics, who was born in Hungary, died Tuesday.

He immigrated to the United States in 1957.

He was a freedom fighter in the Hungarian Underground during World War II.

Mr. Markotics worked for KREM for 25 years in maintenance.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Betty Markotics, at the home.

Ruth Roach Spokane

Memorial service for Ruth A. Roach, 58, is planned for 11 a.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral HomeSouth.

Mrs. Roach, who died Saturday, was born in Seattle.

She was a social worker for nonprofit agencies and had lived in Spokane for 28 years.

She graduated from Washington State University with a psychology degree and received a master’s degree in education from Gonzaga University.

Mrs. Roach was a member of the Inland Empire Philatelic Society and was chosen Philatelist of the year in 1991. She was also a member of the American Philatelic Society, the International Society of Worldwide Stamp Collectors and the American Association of University Women.

She designed the Lilac stamp first-day cover in 1993.

She is survived by her husband of 38 years, David Roach; three sons, Kelly Roach of Waterloo, Ontario, Jerry Roach of Huntington Beach, Calif., and Erin Roach of Walnut Creek, Calif.; her parents, Lloyd and Mary Anderson of Seattle; one sister, Sue Gross of St. Charles, Ill.; and two grandchildren.

Edward Roen Spokane

Service for Edward L. Roen, 80, is set for 2:30 p.m. today at Pilgrim Lutheran Church. Burial will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mr. Roen, who died Wednesday, was born in Rice Lake, Wis.

He married Ethel Thorstad in 1941.

He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps and had served in the Army for more than 20 years as a medical supply officer. He served during World War II and the Korean War.

He retired as a master sergeant and worked for another 15 years in civil service in the same position.

He moved to Spokane in 1979 from El Paso, Texas.

Mr. Roen was a member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church and the Sons of Norway Lodge.

His wife died in 1990.

He is survived by three sons, David Roen of Clarkston, Wash., Barton Roen of Santa Clarita, Calif., and Roger Roen of Spokane; two daughters, Mary Duff of Richland and Marjorie Roen of Spokane; one brother, Arnold Roen of Belton, Texas; one sister, Mildred Bjugstad of Barron, Wis.; and seven grandchildren.

Carl Grandinetti Spokane

Visitation for Carl H. Grandinetti, 62, is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Service will follow at 1 p.m. at Holy Cross Mausoleum.

Mr. Grandinetti, who died Tuesday, was a lifetime Spokane resident.

He graduated from Lewis and Clark High School and was co-owner of Chattaroy Hills Restaurant.

He was a member of the Machinists Union and was a coach for the Modified Fast Pitch Women’s Fur League, which won many city championships. His bowling team won a Spokane city championship.

Mr. Grandinetti’s survivors include his wife, Shirley Grandinetti; three daughters, Carla Sullivan, Paula Montgomery and Glori Gibford, all of Spokane; three brothers, John, Ed and Bob Grandinetti, all of Spokane; two sisters, Julie Adams of Spokane and Fan Lewis of Ephrata, Wash.; and four grandchildren.
