Yankees Add Speed To Lineup
The New York Yankees acquired outfielder Tim Raines from the Chicago White Sox for future considerations, and new manager Joe Torre immediately equipped him with a virtually permanent green light.
“He’s had experience,” Torre said. “He knows what he’s doing on the bases. He’ll have a green light 99.9 percent of the time.”
The Yankees stole just 50 bases last season, last in the American League. Raines has 777 career steals, fourth on the all-time list.
Raines batted .285 with the White Sox last season.
The Pittsburgh Pirates signed third baseman Charlie Hayes to a one-year contract with an option for the 1997 season. No other terms of the deal were disclosed.
The Chicago Cubs signed free-agent Doug Jones, a right-handed reliever, to a one-year contract. Financial terms of the contract were not disclosed.
