Officers Track, Catch Man After Homeowner Walks In On Burglar

From Staff And Wire Reports

Officers from three law enforcement agencies tracked and arrested a man Saturday afternoon after he broke into a Spokane Valley home.

A man came home and found a burglar inside his house on the 10600 block of East 28th about 1:45 p.m. The burglar had his arms full of items from the house, the man told sheriff’s deputies.

Officers tracked the man for nearly 2 hours before finding him hiding in the basement storage area of an apartment complex at 8910 E. Second, said sheriff’s Lt. David Wiyrick.

Gary D. McCabe, 31, was charged with burglary. McCabe has eight burglary convictions over the last 12 years and a weapons conviction, said Wiyrick.

Deputies said the chase started when the homeowner came home and startled McCabe, who fled the house.

Deputies found the McCabe’s tracks at 28th and University and followed them into the Dishman Hills Natural Area. After following them for about a mile, they lost the track’s briefly.

When deputies found the tracks again, they followed them to Second and Dishman Road, where McCabe spotted the deputies and began to run, deputies said.

With help from state patrol troopers, a Spokane police D.A.R.E. officer and a sheriff’s dog, deputies found McCabe at the apartment complex.
