Bill Clarifies Rules On Jail Time Credit
People sent to jail for non-payment of fines receive credit at the rate of $35 per day for each day served.
But court officials say some inmates are trying to claim credit at $35 per day when they are both fined and sent to jail.
The House Judiciary, Rules and Administration Committee on Tuesday approved introduction of a bill to clarify when an inmate can receive credit.
Court spokesman Thomas Frost said the measure stresses that only when someone goes to jail for failure to pay a fine will the $35 per day credit apply.
The measure will return to the committee for action later.
