Swimmer Nears End Of Trans-Atlantic Trip
A French adventurer trying to swim across the Atlantic Ocean is just days away from his destination - Barbados.
Guy Delage, 42, on Tuesday was about 350 miles off the coast of the eastern Caribbean island, where he plans to end his journey Feb. 9.
Accompanied by an unmanned raft loaded with supplies, Delage set out Dec. 16 to swim the 2,440-mile route to the Caribbean from the Cape Verde Islands off West Africa.
He swims while holding onto a 2-foot float which contains a survival mini-raft, a desalinization device, a distress beacon, a compass and a special underwater rifle to ward off sharks. Delage swims for about 10 hours a day and sleeps aboard the 15-foot raft.
