Central Valley School District students served up a smorgasbord of award-winning artwork, music, literature and photography last weekend.
Winners of the 1995 Parent Teacher Association Reflections were honored at an awards ceremony Saturday at Horizon Junior High. The winning artwork also was on display.
“The children need the recognition in the arts,” said Marilyn Greer, chairwoman of the PTA’s Reflections program for the Central Valley School District PTA Council. “It’s one of the things that isn’t recognized that much in school, compared to sports programs.”
The competition attracted 180 art entries, 58 literature entries, 27 photography entries and 12 music entries from 12 Central Valley schools. Those entries are divided into levels: primary, kindergarten through second grade; intermediate, third through fifth grade; middle, sixth through eighth grade; and senior, ninth grade.
In most categories, the top two entries in each level were given outstanding awards and the top 10 entries were given outstanding honorable mention awards. The outstanding award entries will be submitted to the state competition in mid-February.
The PTA could only select 24 entries to send to the state competition and chose those based on overall quality. In some levels, no outstanding awards were granted.
Greer said 14 judges determined the winners.
These students earned outstanding awards for their artwork, music, literature and photography. They will compete in the state PTA contest in February.
