Man Charged With Raping Prostitute Idaho Officials File Felony Charges Against Spokane Man

A 54-year-old man accused of raping a prostitute at his mother-in-law’s cabin is now facing two felony charges.

The Kootenai County prosecutor’s office filed charges of rape and interstate trafficking in prostitution against John P. Dempster of Spokane.

Idaho State Police officials say he raped a 27-year-old Spokane prostitute with whom he had allegedly paid to have sex earlier the same day.

“Just because someone is engaging in prostitution, doesn’t mean members of the public can rape that person,” said Brian Watkins, Kootenai County deputy prosecutor.

Dempster picked the woman up in Spokane on Sept. 17, 1994, ISP Cpl. Chris Duggan testified at a recent court hearing.

Duggan said the two bought crack cocaine in Spokane and then drove to Kootenai County.

Dempster agreed to pay the woman $100 and, per their agreement, had intercourse with her once in Spokane and once at a Coeur d’Alene cabin owned by his wife’s mother, Duggan said.

After that, the woman told Dempster she was tired and didn’t want to have sex any more, Cpl. Duggan testified.

She told police that Dempster then dragged her into the bedroom and forced her to have sex, according to court records.

The woman later fled the cabin in his car and, while heading up U.S. Highway 95, drove it off the road. When ISP officers arrived, she told them what had happened.

“She told me that she was a crack addict and that she had smoked crack and shot up crack,” Duggan testified. “She told me that she had been raped by the owner of the car.”

The woman was charged with possession of crack cocaine, drunken driving and prostitution, among other crimes.

Dempster was charged with the two felonies. He also has been found guilty of patronizing a prostitute.

The woman’s defense attorney, Tim Gresback, said he is pleasantly surprised the rape charge was filed against Dempster.
