Officers Unable To Find Body After Man Jumps Off Bridge

From Staff Reports

Searchers were unable to find the body of a man who jumped off Spokane’s Monroe Street Bridge on Wednesday night and authorities had no information on the identity of the jumper.

Divers rushed to Peaceful Valley along the Spokane River, just west of downtown at 8:10 p.m., after a police officer saw the man leap from the bridge. The search was called off by 9 p.m.

A helicopter circled above the river but didn’t see any sign of the man, so nearby divers were not sent into the water, said Tom Mattern, a Spokane County marine deputy.

Angie Miller, 19, was walking north on the bridge when she saw the man jump off the bridge’s east side.

“His life must have been pretty bad for him to do that,” she said.

The police officer was just driving by when he saw the man jump, Spokane Police Lt. Al Odenthal said.
