Routine Traffic Stop Finds Man In Possession Of Stolen Items

A Newport, Wash., man was arrested last week for possession of stolen property after some jewelry - stolen from a North Side home - was found in the car he was driving.

Richard Lee Syers, 23, was pulled over Saturday on a routine traffic stop, Spokane police said. Officers noticed a wallet on the car seat, which contained the identification of a man whose home had been burglarized.

Police searched the rest of Syers’s car and found the jewelry. They determined the stolen items had been taken from a home in the N6200 block of Howard, which had been ransacked by burglars.

More than 30 items from that house were found in Syers’s car, police said.

Shoplifting suspect arrested

An eclectic shopper was arrested at Sears in NorthTown Mall this week after store security officers watched him load a backpack with merchandise at least three times, police said.

Tyler David Hammond, 19, of Pullman, was booked into the Spokane County Jail for second-degree theft.

Store security officers said Hammond wandered through the linens, furniture, electronics and housewares departments, putting items from each in his backpack. Hammond made three trips to the parking lot and unloaded merchandise into his car, returning to the Sears store each time, police said.

When he finally went to his car and started to leave, security officers took him into custody and called Spokane police. An officer watched the store’s security videotape and arrested Hammond.

Two found inside school

Two 18-year-olds were arrested last Thursday when they were found inside Balboa Elementary shortly before midnight, Spokane police said.

Jeffrey Yates, of Deer Park, and Christopher Hagerman, N5703 Lindeke, were booked into the Spokane County Jail for second-degree burglary.

Police went to the school, W3010 Holyoke, after an alarm went off. While a police dog searched the school, officers saw one of the men inside with a backpack. A few minutes later, two men ran from the building.

Inside the backpack were various tools, including a hammer, pliers, screwdrivers, duct tape and disposable gloves. Police said the burglars broke a window out of a door to get inside.

String of burglaries

A string of North Side residential burglaries has been reported in the past week.

One involved a resident of the W1000 block of Jackson, who told police three people entered his house Monday, threatened him and left with a microwave oven and 33 compact discs.

A second break-in was reported later Monday on the W4800 block of Francis by the homeowner’s son. Besides taking several items from the home, the burglar also killed a pet hamster with a knife.

Garage and shed burglaries were reported on the N3900 block of Pittsburg, the E400 block of Montgomery, the E1000 block of Central, the N2500 block of Washington and the E1900 block of Illinois.

In several cases the doors were not locked. The most popular items taken were bicycles, power equipment and tools. The average value of stolen items was between $500 and $1,000. In one case, the burglars stole only a flashlight.
