New U.N. Commander Tours Bihac Enclave
The new commander of U.N. forces on Thursday toured the most volatile corner of Bosnia, where fighting has vexed international efforts to anchor a month-old, countrywide truce.
U.N. officials said British Lt. Gen. Rupert Smith, who took over command of 24,000 peacekeeping troops in Bosnia, was in the Bihac area to visit Bangladeshi peacekeepers and the commander of the government’s beleaguered 5th Corps, Gen. Atif Dudakovic.
U.N. officials reported a massing of tanks, artillery and troops from Serb-held regions of neighboring Croatia in the area.
