Retailers Report Better January Sales

Business picked up in January for many of the nation’s big retailers as recalcitrant winter weather settled in and consumers sought bargains.

Apparel retailers who had a disappointing Christmas finally got the business they wanted, but with much of the clothes marked down heavily, their profit margins suffered.

Retailers who sell appliances and home-related items had another good month after a strong holiday season.
