Gary Kubiak, who was backup to Denver Broncos quarterback John Elway for nine seasons, may become Elway’s coach, according to Broncos new head coach Mike Shanahan.

Kubiak, who was quarterbacks coach last season for the 49ers where Shanahan was offensive coordinator, reached informal agreement with the Broncos.

Shanahan also said 49ers assistant offensive coach Brian Pariani has also agreed to join the Broncos as tight ends coach.

The Super Bowl champion San Francisco 49ers began filling their depleted coaching ranks, naming Pete Carroll as defensive coordinator.

Carroll, who was fired as head coach of tne New York Jets in January, succeeds Ray Rhodes, appointed Philadelphia Eagles coach on Thursday.

San Francisco wide receiver Jerry Rice, who had 10 receptions for 149 yards and three touchdowns in the Super Bowl despite a slight shoulder separation, won’t be able to play in Sunday’s Pro Bowl in Honolulu.

Herman Moore of the Detroit Lions, who had 72 receptions for 1,173 yards and 11 TDs this season, will replace Rice on the NFC roster.
