Tissue Helps Bucs Put Squeeze To Bearcats

Whitworth’s Jennifer Tissue is squeezably soft in name only. She plays basketball with all the style and flair of a muddy pickup truck.

She’s got the bruises from the court to prove it.

In Whitworth’s 61-53 women’s basketball win Friday night against Willamette at the Pirates’ Fieldhouse, Tissue finished with 13 points. Her final basket came in a manner in which only she could do it.

With the Pirates holding a 52-44 lead with 2 minutes to play and the 30-second shot clock running down, Tissue caught a pass at the top of the key and banked in a 3-pointer with time about to expire.

That basket proved to be the final nail in the Bearcats’ coffin. With the win, Whitworth (6-2 NCIC, 12-11) moved into a first-place tie with Willamette (6-2, 16-5).

“This win was reflection of how we practiced all week long,” Tissue said. “After losing to Pacific Lutheran last week, we just bounced back and worked really hard.”

Baseball

Long Beach 10, WSU 9

The Forty-Niners (1-0) scored with two outs in the ninth inning to hand Washington State (1-1) a disappointing loss in a 4-hour marathon that included 12 errors and 22 runners left on base.

The game then ended on a controversial play when Tim Hairston was safe at first on shortstop Mike Wetmore’s high throw. WSU argued that Ty Solomon tagged Hairston as Tim Falsken.

WSU’s Mike Kinkade collected four straight hits and drove home three runs.
