Jail Order Restored After 25 Injured

Compiled From Wire Services

Calm returned to Cook County Jail on Sunday, a day after inmates faced down guards and battled authorities with homemade weapons.

About 230 inmates were involved, Sheriff Michael Sheahan said. The fracas began Saturday morning with a protest in the jail’s maximum-security section.

Twenty-one inmates and four guards were injured, Sheahan said. Three inmates were admitted to a hospital and were in fair condition, he said.

Order was restored within hours, authorities said.
