O’Bannon’s Outburst Triggers Ucla To Lopsided Romp Over Irish

Associated Press

George Zidek scored 20 points and No. 7 UCLA, inspired by Ed O’Bannon’s outburst over a hard foul on a teammate in the second half, routed Notre Dame 92-55 Sunday.

It was the most lopsided outcome between the schools since the Bruins won 114-56 during the 1971-72 season.

The Bruins (14-2) led by just two points after a sloppy first half in which UCLA shot 32 percent and Notre Dame committed 16 turnovers. But they got hot to start second half, building a 38-29 advantage as the Irish (13-8) missed their first five shots.

UCLA point guard Tyus Edney was on a drive to the basket when he was knocked to the floor by Irish forward Derek Manner. He winced in pain, prompting O’Bannon to rush at Manner. O’Bannon was held back by teammates before receiving a technical.

The Irish, who shocked UCLA 79-63 last season in South Bend, didn’t stand a chance after O’Bannon’s fit transformed the Bruins.

Already enjoying an eight-point lead, UCLA went on a 23-3 run, including seven by Zidek, for a 66-38 advantage with 9:07 remaining.
