Winners Announced In Mlk Essay Contest

Winners have been announced for the 1995 Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Essay Contest, sponsored by the Black Education Program at Eastern Washington University.

The subject was “Turning the Dream into a Reality.” More than 500 students entered the competition.

The winning students will be presented with awards and certificates from the governor at the EWU Black History Month Banquet on Saturday.

The winning students, their division, schools and awards are:

Elementary School Division (Grades 4-6)

First place: Chad Austin, Trent Elementary School, $100.

Second place: Nick Rotas, Blair Elementary School, Fairchild Air Force Base, $50.

Honorable Mention: Brittany Baynes, Greenacres Elementary School.

Junior High School Division (Grades 7-9)

First place: Mariko Sola, Carmichael Middle School, Richland, $100.

Second place: Stephanie Williams, Lewis and Clark High School, $50.

Honorable Mention: Andrew Treadway, Cheney Middle School, $50.

High School Division (Grades 10-12)

First place: Rachel Webster, Lewis and Clark High School, $150.

Second place: Matt Eastman, East Valley High School, $75.

Honorable Mention: Vongpheth Luanphaxay, Kennewick High School, Kennewick, $50.

College/University Division

First place: Sheila Morgan, Eastern Washington University, $200.

Second place: Azure Thompson, EWU, $100.

Honorable Mention: Jimmy Brown, EWU.

Jarod Robb, of Spokane and Anthony Vanhollebeke, of Richland, were named to the Idaho State University College of Business Dean’s List for the fall semester.

Senior Girl Scout Jennifer Green, daughter of Michelle and Gary Green, Wilbur, Wash., has been chosen to attend a leadership institute in New York by the Girl Scouts Inland Empire Council. She was one of 25 girls chosen nationwide to participate.

A sophomore at Wilbur High School, Green participates in volleyball, basketball and track at school, is a Natural Helper, member of the Wilbur Ranch Hand 4-H Club and active in her church youth group.

She has been a Girl Scout for 10 years and is in Troop 14. For two years, she was the top Girl Scout cookie seller in Wilbur.
