Kootenai United Way Sets Pledge Record

United Way of Kootenai County has raised just over $440,000 in pledges this year, meeting its goal and setting a record for the best year ever. The money will support 28 human service programs in Kootenai County.

Kootenai County United Way officials have acknowledged the work of hundreds of volunteers who made the successful charity fund drive possible.

Laura Garrison, who has been active on the board of directors since 1992, was named Volunteer of the Year. Garrison has also been the volunteer treasurer for the Salvation Army for nine years.

Garrison has held other United Way posts, including campaign chair, vice president of the board and fund distribution chair.

Other special awards presented for the Kootenai County United Way drive were: private sector - Mountain West Savings Bank; public sector - Kootenai County Coroner’s Office; and Spirit of Volunteerism Award - The Hagadone Corp.

The Ben B. Cheney Foundation of Tacoma has awarded Gonzaga University a $20,000 grant for scholarships in the academic years of 1995-96 and 1996-97.

The merit scholarships, at $1,000 each, will be awarded to students who demonstrate leadership, academic achievement, citizenship and moral character. Each year $10,000 will be distributed as follows: $4,000 to four law students, $4,000 to four business administration majors, and $2,00 to two engineering majors.

The foundation also provided two gifts of $25,000 to begin planning the renovation of GU’s baseball stadium.

Joseph Horwath, son of William and Sheryl Horwath, Chattaroy, has been placed on the Dean’s List at Villanova University. He received a 4.0 grade-point average and is a sophomore majoring in electrical engineering. He is a 1993 graduate of Gonzaga Preparatory School.

Josh Adams, a 1993 graduate of University High School, has been placed on the Dean’s List at the University of Idaho for the fall semester. He earned a 4.0 gradepoint average.

Deon Smith, Spokane, has been named to the President’s Honor Roll for fall semester at Phillips University, Enid, Okla. Smith is a senior majoring in biology.

Matthew Johnson, son of Dr. and Mrs. Bruce Johnson, Colbert, has received high honors and was named to the Dean’s List at the Vanderbilt University School of Engineering, Nashville, Tenn.
