N.Y. Bomb Suspect Apprehended

The alleged mastermind of the World Trade Center bombing was in custody Wednesday in New York after two years as a fugitive.

Ramzi Yousef was arrested in Pakistan on Tuesday and flown to New York later in the day, U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno said Wednesday.

Yousef was the alleged mastermind behind the Feb. 26, 1993, bombing at the 110-story twin towers - the world’s second-tallest buildings. The explosion killed six people, injured more than 1,000 and caused $500 million in damage.

The U.S. government posted a $2 million reward for the return of Yousef, who fled for Iraq hours after the blast. It was not immediately clear who, if anyone, would collect the reward. No details were provided immediately on how Yousef was found and apprehended.

President Clinton said Wednesday he wants to thank “all involved in this important process. This arrest is a major step forward in the fight against terrorism.”

Yousef was indicted on 11 counts related to the bombing. He allegedly had come to the United States in September 1992 with plans to bomb a U.S. target.
