Area Woman Makes Quick Work Of Tough Split

Chuck Stewart Correspondent

It was a once-in-a-lifetime shot for Elma Potter.

Bowling in the women’s Pinknockers league at Colonial City Bowl, Potter, 81, converted the “Big Four,” the 4-6-7-10 split.

It may be the toughest conversion in bowling, save for the 7-10.

It was the first one Potter, who has been bowling 20 years, has even seen picked up. “I’ve had a few, but I don’t get that split very often.”

Dan’s Total Automotive broke the 8-year-old city five-man team record with a 1,261 game in the Merchants men’s league last week at Airway Bowl.

Bob Johnson had a 299, missing a perfect game on his last ball; Kevin Gouin, 257; Dave Johnson, 204; Dan Anderson, 269; and Joe Rutledge, 232, as the quintet topped the mark of 1,258 set during the 1987-88 season at North Bowl.

Boating

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will conduct a seven-week safe boating class for new boaters and the experienced alike at two sites beginning next week.

One class will start Tuesday at University High School, the other Thursday at Glover Middle School. Both run 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday nights. Info: (509) 926-2116.

Dirt Brothers raised $18,047 to win the Jimmie Heuga’s Ski Express fund-raiser for MS last weekend at Schweitzer Mountain.

Scott Barksdale and Brandon Moon of Sandpoint and Christi Gregorak of Spokane qualified for the national finals to be held in Vail, Colo., April 5-9.

The event attracted a record 25 teams that raised a record $77,574. Nipples & Cripples of Spokane was second with $11,625.

Steve Smith and Mats Hjelm tied for the best individual run, 20.63 seconds. Associated Orthopodic Specialists had the best team run, 59.77.
