Balanced Bruins Hold Off Washington, 74-66

Associated Press

George Zidek and Ed O’Bannon each scored 17 points and Charles O’Bannon hit all six of his fieldgoal tries as UCLA beat Washington 74-66 in Pacific-10 Conference men’s basketball at Seattle.

Freshman J.R. Henderson added 16 points and Charles O’Bannon had 13 for the Bruins (8-2 Pac10, 15-2 overall). Bryant Boston topped the Huskies (1-9, 5-13) with 18 points.

Zidek scored 13 points in the second half.

Ahead 43-28 at halftime, the Bruins took their biggest lead at 48-31 3:16 into the second half and appeared ready to break the game open.

But the Huskies battled back. Down 59-46 with 11:20 left, Washington went on a 14-4 run to close within 63-60 after David Hawken made two free throws with 7:49 to play.

The deep and talented Bruins outscored the Huskies 11-6 the rest of the way. Ed O’Bannon’s putback and freshman Toby Bailey’s short shot in the key put UCLA in front 67-60 with 6:20 to go.

UCLA won despite being outrebounded 50-34. The key was shooting, with the Bruins hitting 57 percent, the Huskies 33 percent.

The Bruins won their fifth in a row against Washington, including a 75-57 victory at Pauley Pavilion this season. They have won three straight overall since losing to California on Jan. 28.

Washington played without starting point guard Michael McClain, who was suspended Wednesday in connection with an assault on Rhonda Smith, the leading scorer and rebounder on the Huskies’ women’s team.

McClain, a junior, will miss Washington’s final 10 games.

The Huskies lost for the 10th time in their last 11.
