Marathon

From Staff Reports

Two minutes down, 2 minutes to go.

That’s roughly where Spokane’s Stan Holman finds himself in his bid to qualify for the 1996 U.S. Olympic Trials after after running a personal record by 2 minutes, 5 seconds in the Las Vegas Marathon last weekend.

Holman, who turns 30 on Feb. 25, ran the 26 miles, 385 yards in 2 hours, 24 minutes, 34 seconds to finish 15th overall, fifth among Americans.

But the most important thing was it inched him closer to the 2:22 clocking he needs to qualify for the Olympic Trials. His next marathon likely will be in St. George, Utah, in the fall.

Also in Las Vegas, Craig Bush of Spokane finished in 2:53, Jim Volk in 3:26 and Don Jolly in 3:38. In the wheelchair category, Spokane’s Jerry Martin finished second in 1:56:30.

Russian Vladimir Netreba won in the field of 5,000 in 2:14:52.
