More Wandering Bison Killed

From Staff And Wire Reports

Twelve more bison were killed Friday at a private elk feeding ground near here, bringing to nearly 300 the number of bison killed in Montana after wandering across the Yellowstone National Park border.

Department of Livestock personnel shot the bison Friday, as they did Jan. 31 when 35 other bison were killed in the same area. Federal rangers and Montana game wardens have refused to shoot bison there, contending they are lured from the park by artificial feed.

Fifty-four other bison were killed earlier in the week near Gardiner when they migrated onto private ranch lands of the Church Universal and Triumphant.

So far this winter, 291 Yellowstone bison have been killed in Montana.

Nez Perce Indians from Idaho took the carcasses of the 12 animals shot Friday.

The bison are killed when they leave Yellowstone because officials fear they could infect cattle with brucellosis, which causes domestic livestock to abort.
