Schillinger Saves West Valley

Joe Everson Correspondent

Frontier League

The Cheney Blackhawks, leading West Valley by five points with 30 seconds to play at WV on Saturday night, were about to send a big-time message to the Eagles with the Frontier League district tournament only two weeks away.

In those last 30 ticks, though, West Valley junior guard David Schillinger sent his own message, scoring six points and setting up teammate Vinnie Pecht for the game-winning basket in a heartstopping 69-68 win.

The Eagles (8-1, 16-3) have clinched the top seed in the district tournament with one game - against last-place East Valley - left to play. The Blackhawks (5-4, 8-10) have had a frustrating season marked by early season injuries, but they’ve been looking like contenders lately.

After bouncing back from a 10-point first-half deficit, they looked like they’d finally made the grade. The Hawks had led briefly in the third period, but not until Mario Chodorowski drained backto-back 3’s for a 60-54 edge with 3 minutes to play did Cheney have a cushion.

What finally did the Blackhawks in was their inability to protect the ball down the stretch. They made five turnovers in the last 2:24, failing to take advantage of WV mistakes and missed shots.

And, finally, along came Schillinger, who finished with 30 points, 21 in the second half. A basket by Richard DeMulling gave Cheney a 66-61 lead with a minute left, and the Hawks were at the foul line with 35 seconds to go.

But the free throw was off, and with 25 seconds to play Schillinger drove the lane for a layin, was fouled and hit the free throw to cut the lead to 66-64. Cheney’s Abdul Odood hit two free throws to push it back to 68-64 just 1 second later, but Schillinger’s 3 at :18 trimmed the Hawks’ lead to 68-67.

With 15 seconds to go, WV’s Brian Lindley tied up the inbound pass, and the possession arrow was pointing the Eagles’ way. Schillinger found an opening, split the lane and dished to Pecht, who missed the layin but grabbed his own rebound and scored on a lefty putback with 6 seconds to go. Cheney got only a rushed half-court attempt at the end.

Schillinger had five 3’s on the way to his 30 points, and the Eagles finished with 11 treys. Greg Jones added 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Eagles, and Pecht had six boards, all in the second half.

For Cheney, DeMulling scored 24 points, 16 in the second half, and had eight boards. Chodorowski nailed four second-half 3’s and finished with 17 points and seven rebounds.
