Skinheads trampled memorial candles at an overnight vigil for four Gypsies killed by a bomb, the ceremony’s organizers said.
The Gypsies died Feb. 5 in a blast triggered when they tried to remove an anti-Gypsy sign from a pole near their settlement in the southern town of Oberwart. They were buried Saturday.
Federal President Thomas Klestil expressed outrage and condemned a recent surge of rightwing extremism.
Members of a human rights group said skinheads arrived at the vigil twice to destroy candle and to torch arrangements. They said police ignored calls for help.
Vienna Police Chief Guenter Boegl said patrols passed the site five times during the night.
“They did not notice anything.”
