Ecuador, Peru Still Fighting Despite Cease-Fire

More fighting was reported Tuesday between Ecuador and Peru, only 90 minutes after a cease-fire was to have taken effect in their border war.

Ecuador and Peru both have declared victory in the nearly 3-week-long conflict, which has killed at least 49 people and wounded more than 100.The two countries have squabbled over the rain forest in the Cordillera del Condor mountain range ever since they fought a war in 1941.

The cease-fire was to have taken effect at noon, but Peru’s military claimed there was “intense fire” by Ecuadorean artillery on the border post of Tiwintza beginning at 1:30 p.m. Peru claims it captured the base Monday, but Ecuador has denied that.

Ecuador’s military denied Tuesday night that it had launched attacks after the cease-fire was to have gone into effect. The government earlier had said there was fighting Tuesday but provided no details.
